I purchase large rolls of cotton canvas that is cut up to make tote bags and 2 bottle wine bags. I travel to fabric outlet stores in the northeast to find durable outdoor fabric in a variety of colors and designs that I cut up and sew on the canvas as a bottom and handles to make them not only durable but pretty. The 2 bottle wine bag I make in a similar design but with one handle and a divider in the middle that is removable so the small bag can be used in a variety of other ways…bingo bag, small tote, lunch bag etc. My customers come up with new uses for this bag all the time!
I also make upholstery pillows using fabric that I find in the outlet stores. I try to keep a theme of the "Adirondacks" featuring bears, deer, moose etc. but this type of quality fabric in a price I can afford is becoming increasingly difficult to find so I have added a few floral designs which so far are selling well. The area I live in has a history of being the leather capital of the world. Many skin mills have closed but we do have a few well-known ones that I am lucky enough to be able to purchase both whole and half hides from. With that being said I try to make my pillows unique by finishing them with a leather back. I match up the leather with the fabric to decide what looks best sometimes using the finished side of the leather and sometimes using the unfinished/suede side. All pillows have a zipper in the back so can be purchased as just a cover to use on an existing pillow the customer might have, or I sell them with a store purchased pillow insert which is also used for display.
I am always looking for new design ideas and take inspiration from my customers!
